Mary Ann Robinson, a young lady living in The Bronx, New York, with her masochist, domineering mother and sympathetic however inadequate stepfather, is assaulted while strolling home one night. Hushing up about the assault, Mary Ann flees, trying to lose herself in Manhattan by leasing a shabby level and taking an occupation in a dime store.
