Follows the journey of a young boy, Agu, who is forced to join a group of soldiers in an unnamed West African country. While Agu fears his commander and many of the men around him, his fledgling childhood has been brutally shattered by the war raging through his country, and he is at first torn between conflicting revulsion and fascination Depicts the mechanics of war and does not shy away from explicit, visceral detail, and paints a complex, difficult picture of Agu as a child soldier.

Movie Parental Guide

nudity Suggested MPAA rating: R for disturbing graphic war violence including a brief rape, drug use, some nudity, and language including some sexual references--all involving children. In one scene, it's implied that a man coerces a young boy to perform a sexual act on him, but the act is not shown at all and not even referenced. We see an extremely brief and quick flash of a woman being raped (no nudity and not close up) as a young boy comes in and quickly shoots the woman in the head. In one scene, it's implied that a group of soldiers have sex with a group of women. We see them go off into separate rooms, and we see the men come out of the rooms later on, shirtless. Some mild sexual references, but nothing too explicit. There are several scenes that show one of the soldiers completely naked from the front and back, and is very graphic.
violence There is strong bloody violence throughout as combatants and non-combatants alike are shot, hacked to death or blown up with grenades - often with casual indifference. Stronger moments of violence include An innocent prisoner is hacked to death with machete as part of an obedience test. The scene is intense and the first blows depict graphic shots of the aftermath. A woman is shot in the head with an assault rifle at point blank range while being raped. Although this shot is brief, lasting only a second, it is graphic, A small girl is stomped to death. Mostly off-screen, we see her mouth full of blood.
profanity There are approximately twenty-five uses of strong language. F**k/ F**k*ng is used quite a number of times.
alcohol There are several portrayals of cannabis joint smoking, more often than not by child soldiers. In one scene an adult rebel commander places resin, possibly heroin, on silver foil, heats it and inhales the resulting fumes. A cocaine-like substance is also snorted by several characters throughout the film.
frightening Although the violence in this film is very strong and graphic, most of it is fairly brief and over quickly, and some of the stronger moments of violence are off-screen, but only barely. There is a scene approximately just over an hour into the film where a building is stormed by child soldiers, a woman is raped before being shot in the head, and a young girl, barely around five years of age, is stomped to death by a group of child soldiers, though most of it is (barely) off-screen. The film is incredibly bleak, violent and disturbing, and should not be watched by anybody who is not matured in their mindset.
