When her dad enrolls to battle for the British in WWI, youthful Sara Crewe goes to New York to go to the same life experience school her late mother went to. She soon conflicts with the extreme headmistress, Miss Minchin, who endeavors to smother Sara's innovativeness and feeling of self-esteem. Sara's conviction that "each young lady's a princess" is tried as far as possible, in any case, when word comes that her dad was executed in real life and his home has been seized by the British government.
